The African elephant has a heavier heart in absolute terms, up to around 21 kilograms, but an elephant also weighs between 4,000 and 7,000 kilograms. The giraffe, with a body weight of roughly 750 to 1,200 kilograms, also has to pump blood nearly two meters upward against gravity. That is a completely different challenge altogether.

The giraffe’s heart: a marvel of nature

The walls of a giraffe’s left heart ventricle can be as much as 7.5 centimeters thick. That might sound excessive, but without that thickness, the animal would literally pass out every time it raised its head after taking a drink of water.

That blood pressure is genuinely extraordinary

A giraffe has a systolic blood pressure of approximately 280 mmHg, while the normal human range sits at 120 mmHg. On top of that, giraffes have special valves in the carotid artery that prevent blood from suddenly rushing back to the brain when the animal lowers its head to drink.
