Few Dutch people know that the 1928 Games were the very first edition at which the Olympic flame was lit during the Games themselves — a tradition that has never since been absent, and which still begins in Olympia, Greece.

At the first modern Games in Athens in 1896, only thirteen countries took part, with a total of 285 athletes. The fact that Amsterdam attracted 46 countries and 2,887 athletes just over three decades later says something about how rapidly the Olympic movement grew during that period.
